James Marshall, the husband of Rose Annie Sheridan, was born on December 21, 1861, in his family home in Main Street, Kilbirnie, Ayrshire, Scotland. His parents, Hugh Marshall and Agnes Cook, were in the early stages of their marriage, having only married 12 months previously.
On December 31, 1860, at Kilbirnie, 21 year old labourer Hugh Marshall married Agnes Cook, a flax spinner of the same age.Hugh was one of the children of James Marshall, labourer, and his wife Janet Whiteford. Agnes Cook was the daughter of James Cook, miner, and Sarah Jardin.
James Marshall, Hugh's father, married Janet Whiteford on November 25, 1836, at Dalry, Ayr. Their first child, Margaret, was born on May 13, 1838, at Dalry. Hugh Whiteford Marshall was born November 10, 1839, at Dalry, and Marrion followed in March of 1842.

Not surprisingly, James Marshall remarried in 1850...on September 9, 1850, at Kilbirnie, James Marshall, pitheadman, married Ann Adams.

Just months after the 1861 census return was taken, Ann Marshall, second wife of James Marshall, died at the age of 43 years. On 17 September, 1861, at 4 P.M, Ann Marshall, daughter of Francis Adam, iron miner, and Margaret Haddy, died of phthisis pulmonalis(Tuberculosis).
For the second time James Marshall was left a widower with small children to care for, and for the second time he remarried.
On September 1, 1862, at Kilbirnie Manse, after banns according to the forms of the Church of Scotland, 49 year old widower James Marshall, labourer, married 35 year old widow Agnes Shedden. James parents were given as Robert Marshall, weaver, and Margaret Allan.
Agnes Shedden was the daughter of weaver James Shedden and his wife Margaret Gibson. She had formerly been married to a man named Campbell, as the 1871 census return showed that two children, Elizabeth and William Campbell, were both living in James Marshall's home as his step-children.

This census reveals that a child was born from James Marshall's thrid marriage... a son named John Marshall was born c. 1865.

James Marshall/ head/ 67/ pit labourer/ born Dalry

James Marshall died in 1881, aged 68 years. He passed away in his Cochran Street home in Kilbirnie at 1:30 A.M on November 5, 1881. His cause of death was 'jaundice'.
His marriage certificate stated that he was married three times- first to Janet Whiteford; secondly to Annie Adams or Penman; and thridly to Agnes Sheddon or Campbell. His parents were given as Robert Marshall, harness weaver, and Margaret Allan.
James Marshall's third and final wife, Agnes Shedden Marshall, survived him by 18 years. She died in 1899, aged 75 years.
That takes care of James Marshall, the namesake and grandfather of Rose Annie Sheridan's husband, James Marshall, but what became of Hugh Marshall, Rose Annie's father-in-law?
After their marriage in Kilbirnie in 1860, Hugh Marshall and his wife Agnes Cook had the following children:

The Marshall men seem not to be suited to "widowerhood", and Hugh remarried the year following his first wife's death. On November 3, 1892, at Kilbirnie, 52 year old Hugh Marshall, ironstone pit labourer, married 35 year old Mary Thomson, the spinster daughter of John Thomson, ironstone pit labourer, and Martha Kerr.
The couple appear in the 1901 Census as follows:

Hugh Whiteford Marshall died in his Bridgend Street, Kilbirnie, home at 3 P.M, February 7, 1911, aged 71 years.
