Another view, Exchange Hotel
I wish that I could remember who holds the original of this photo, as I would love a clear photographic scan of it rather than a grainy 1980s photocopy. Paddy Sheridan is missing from this grouping, but his wife Bridget is present with three of their children, as is Bridget's mother Margaret Bourke, and several staff.
Paddy Sheridan was a butcher in Yarrawonga- it is very likely that it was Bridget who did most of the managing of the Exchange. An article from the Argus newspaper on October 17, 1914, stated:
"REDUCTION OF LICENSES: Yarrawonga, Friday. The Licensing Reduction Board completed its compensation sittings in the Yarrawonga licensing district today, and made the following awards:
Bathumi Hotel, Bathumi: owner 210 pounds, licensee 25 pounds
Burramine Hotel, Burramine: owner 275 pounds
Exchange Hotel, Yarrawonga: owner 375 pounds
Farmer's Arms Hotel, Burramine: owner 280 pounds.
No claims were made by the licensees in the last three cases."
The Burramine Hotel was owned by Bridget Sheridan's father, Paddy Bourke, who had been a local publican and farmer for many years.
